The eIDAS Regulation describes an electronic signature as ‘any data in electronic form which is attached to or logically associated with other data in electronic form and which is used by the signatory to sign.’
In other words, an electronic signature is simply the electronic alternative to handwritten signatures (wet signatures) typically attached to an electronic document. These are often used to act as proof, or evidence on a document, similar to a wet signature but signed digitally instead of on a piece of paper. The process is roughly the same but is more secure, faster and usually more convenient for both the sender and recipient.
What are electronic signatures (eSignatures)?
