Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

17.4 is the latest version and I was hoping it would be better that previous versions. Only the version number was superior.

I will not use 17.4 if I have a choice. it to about 4 times as long to open while it worked (used it for a year). Then, I started getting a message that it was being blocked by a user ...something and it wouldn't open. I rebooted and tried again but with the same results. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it with the same results. Went back to version 12xxx and it works fine

17.4 has issues compared to previous versions. I am using Windows 7 on a 64 bit machine and have had no issues with previous versions. When I first started using 17.4 and found it was slow, I expected to see a fix but nothing has come out. Now that I can no longer use it, even after uninstalling and reinstalling, I am happier because I went back to a better performing version (any of the older versions are better performing form version 12 on back). I don't need a lot of fancy new features -just basic query capability. Microsoft SQL Server is database management by Microsoft which retrieves and stores relational data requested by other software applications which may be on the same computer or of on a network. There are multiple editions and purposes available which range in use depending upon your audience and whether you need a single application or a complex multiple systems. I'm new to it as I've been a MySQL user but have learned that it's evolved a lot over the years where possibilities a few years ago are now realities which shows that Microsoft places a priority on user experience which a lot of people used to question. Microsoft used to know for being popular in it's reach but not as much for it's quality but in this tool and in many others there has been a dramatic shift in terms of quality across the board. Their products are amazing and many essential to hundreds of millions of people every day which makes me appreciate the brand all the more. It's easy to use you can import or export data with just a few clicks. You can utilize the interface easily as it is user friendly generally speaking and is familiar in some ways to other popular open source databases. There's a lot of administrative functionality and the agile development. There are lot more uses for SQL Server than a simple database. You can utilize the extensibility of the platform to integrate analytics reporting and powerful business intelligence tools. I like the .Net tools and Visual Studio integration which can make prototyping and data management much easier. It comes bundled with other software which may be useful to you like SQL Service Reporting and more which is good. There's a lot of support for Microsoft SQL including documentation, video tutorials and quite a lot more. Microsoft has an enormous community online so it's possible to learn from a lot experts freely although it's not an open source software. So you'll need to pay for expert implementation help and support as this process is required. Also consider the investment of hiring an expert to maintain complex setups beyond implementation.

The licensing costs are steep by all accounts. Which deters me in my research as you can use open source software or much lower costs solutions to accomplish the same things though there are free versions for smaller businesses. Perhaps with a little more effort, what you don't spend on the license you could place into development when using MySQL or Postgresql, for example. There's also Google Big Query and Amazon for analytics, or Tableau for reporting. It's going to be a very large investment to move forward with full SQL Server implementation yet you're in good hands and can trust that you will be supported for the long term. I've also read that while there are constant usability improvements and feature upgrades which occur, it can be challenging to constantly be learning or re-learning complex components in new versions.

If you want implementation from Microsoft it's going to make your life much easier but it will cost you. You can utilize Microsoft SQL for so many purposes because it's very robust which is outstanding. There are a lot of useful tools to help you monitor and manage everything you could ever want to such as a data warehouse, business intelligence or analytic reporting. Like the SSIS to help you move around data and work it into other applications. There's a of functionality and integrations possible built on a world class infrastructure. It's enterprise class platform that's well worth a look into certainly.
