What was the best part about using RPG Maker VX Ace?
RPG Maker VX Ace is a game engine specifically designed for making JRPGs or Japanese Role Playing Games with a lot of neat built in features like an easy, albeit not very powerful and customizable character creation, maps made with 'tiles' which can be custom made or bought as part of the many existing DLC or Downloadable Content that the program has, and most important of all, an ability to make the game. Other than that, there isn't much if any programming which makes it a visual game engine and thus, inherently a little bit easier to use with a smaller learning curve.
What would you change about your experience with RPG Maker VX Ace?
The price of the software itself is quite high on its own but when to that you add the cost of all the DLC that you can acquire which has tilesets, music or other things which you can use in your game, the price becomes very big indeed. Thankfully, you can make your own tiles and music and put it into the engine so the DLC isn't mandatory. Other than that, the engine is designed for one thing and one thing only – to make RPG Maker games. No suctomizability in that. The only kind of game you can make is a turn based party based JRPG game and you're not gonna have a lot of fun if you try to make anything else.
Overall Feedback
All things considered, this is a good product with a bit of a high price point. For what it is designed, it is amazing, but for anything else, not so much. Still, if you are looking to make an RPG Maker game, then this is the product for you! Obviously. It isn't perfect, obviously, a lot of small improvements could have been made but none of it is too big of a problem, and certainly not a deal braker, so I still recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to deal with any programming but still wants to make an isometric 2D turn based team based JRPG game.
