We needed to lock our software to the serial number of the USB thumb drive on which it is installed. We wrote a RLM plugin in less than 300 lines, that mostly consisted of Windows USB code. This plugin lets us license our software to a hostid that starts with "USBSERIAL=", without affecting the normal operation of RLM, if it's licensed in the regular manner.
