IntelliJ is great is your write code and want to debug it; it's easy to set up and connect your IDE to a JVM. There's a lot of functionality in your dashboard to help you take care of things and it's relatively intuitive. IntelliJ displays the ongoing progress of many variables and attributes in an easy to read, highly functional way. The keyboard shortcuts are especially useful and really help speed up your workflow. The decompiler tool works great to make it easy to work with decompiled java code. Git integration is another strong feature which allows you to work from within a single window throughout. No need to go to any terminal and run commands as you've got everything inside the IDE. You'll typically find a good experience across platforms including Linux, OSX and Windows and that's always good to know. It supports a lots of java virtual machine languages like Groovy, PERL, Python, Javascript, C++, Scala and Java, of course and comes with a GUI designer. The intelligent assistance features are nice with refactoring and inspection capabilities. The search functionality is excellent with the ability to use regular expressions quickly. The integrations available are a rich ecosystem of plugins for supporting other file types. And it integrates your complete chain which makes it useful through multiple stages of development. The UI is customizable to a good extent which is always good. You can adjust your color theme, all of your accessibility settings and keyboard shortcuts too. I especially like the auto complete function which fills in your code as you go. The templating and meta-programming features are awesome and a significant time saver when you add it all up over time, and it just feels more streamlined and productive. There's a good amount of quality learning resources available for IntelliJ which is great. Anytime you need a refresher or to learn something in particular it's easy to get help including the productivity guide they provide.

It's quite a memory heavy software. You may find it uses quite a lot of resources when you try the downloadable version and may limit the other tools you can use on your VM. Having to restart the IDE every time you update a plugin is a bit of a pain in the butt but not a big deal overall. And perhaps more essential plugins could be included such as Go lang or Scala support.

I've read by many that compared to Eclipse that IntelliJ is so much easier to use but I've not tried Eclipse yet. I have tried others in the market though and definitely find it to be more user friendly in general. If you're a Google Android developer you'll love the fact it's fully supportive of it which makes Android development awesome on IntelliJ. There's also a large, active community supporting IntelliJ and the company actively listens to it and releases multiple updates per year based on your feedback which is awesome. The pricing is reasonable especially for individuals but there is a lot of value and extensibility possible with all of their plans.
