There are three main benefits to upgrading are the ability for you or your team to work faster, more collaboratively and complete mobile access. I would argue it's more professional to do so as the point is to utilize your own domain with Google Apps so you're everything you're doing, email especially, is branded as your company which is awesome. The Google Apps upgrade grants you access to offline access with your calendar, documents, spreadsheets and presentations which you can use and then have updated automatically when you're back online. There's the ability to read and respond to emails without the internet to Gmail is cool and it will send your messages as well when you're back online. The collaborative features are fairly robust and allow for dozens of options to customize your account and share documents very easily. Some of my favorite are the ability to check the world calendar feature. This ensures everyone is on the same page with no excuses for any miscommunication on your team. You can send much bigger files via free Gmail as well, rather than the twenty five megabyte limitation before you have to use Google Drive in regular Gmail. There are a lot of team focused features in Google Apps allowing you to crowdsource feedback which is something I wanted to utilize very recently actually. As well as launch products using event capabilities together with Google+ is pretty cool. But the best overall reason to use Google Apps for five or ten bucks per month in addition to the above noted features is the ability to greatly speed up your own workflow efficiency and productivity. There's actually a lot of keyboard shortcuts which are useful to help most effectively speed up your productivity regardless of the software. To be honest there are way too many features to list here which can help speed up your work so I highly recommend reading their tips page. It was a hassle to remove a domain from one domain from an account as I had partially setup my Google Apps account using another Gmail which I use as well, though decided to make it my personal Gmail instead. None of the troubleshooting options they offered helped to resolve the issue quickly. It was a process of a few days having to contact their support and go through a series of steps in order. I believe it should be easier to do considering I had not completed the Google Apps sign up with the first domain, I only entered information on the first of three steps required to complete the purchase. Kind of a pain in the butt considering I was doing so to utilize Google Apps for my new start up but also to have hands on experience showing a client of mine who is not particularly technically savvy the process.

Google Apps are the upgraded business suite of services which enhance your capabilities across their suite of software tools available. You can use different task based email addresses within your domain and Gmail for different purposes without having to create new accounts or aliases which are more tricky to setup for free Gmail now than in the past, it seems. I've done this several times with the free Gmail, sending as another domain, but the SMTP and POP settings are more challenging to verify than they were in the past. Which is fine if it is easy to set these up in Google Apps. In fact, it's worth the price alone to be able to use Gmail and send and receive emails from your branded domain because the mobile access is so much greater than using Webmail which is archaic comparatively speaking. Yet necessary in order to host our sites and domain based emails accordingly.
